Anti-Tank Drones, Crowdfunding and the War in Ukraine

By Tom McDermott March 9, 2017

What do you do if you are faced with a major war, but you lack the industry or funding to develop and build high-tech capabilities like drones? Ukraine's solution has been to lean on society for innovation.

In this short video from Radio Free Europe, you can see how the Ukrainian military has been working with student groups, using crowdfunded money, to build drones. These are not only used for surveillance, but can include munitions, including anti-tank weaponry. Ukraine see the war against separatists as one of national survival. As such they are increasingly mobilising their society.

Are there any lessons we might draw from this?
