Joint Planning in the Australian Defence Force

By The Cove May 16, 2019

The Australian Defence Doctrine Publications provide the cornerstone of the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) understanding and approach to joint planning. Unfortunately our joint doctrine is available only on the Defence Protected Network (DPN). For serving members, here are the links you'll need to access a number of the major publications around joint planning:

  •  ADDP 5.0 Joint Planning Provides guidance for the planning of ADF campaigns and operations in joint, multinational and multiagency environments.
  • ADFP 5.0.1 Joint Military Appreciation Process This publication is for use by commanders and staff at the operational level and is designed to provide guidance for planning ADF campaigns and operations.
  • ADDP 3.0 Campaigns and Operations This document is focussed on joint warfighting, defined as government directed use of military force to pursue specific national objectives.
  • ADDP 3.2 Amphibious Operations Provides broad guidance on the nature and scope of amphibious warfare within the ADF.
  • ADDP 3.9 Airborne Operations Provides the philosophical doctrine for airborne operations as well as the nature and scope to inform operational planning and effective command and control of airborne operations.

Ultimately, whilst we can read widely on the subject of joint planning through various books and articles, our core understanding of the process must be based on our doctrine. Work your way through each of these publications (and browse the others in the joint planning series) to expand your knowledge outside a purely Army planning mindset.

Thanks Kelly, this is a useful summary and then the hyperlinks were much appreciated. Cheers,

Hi team! This is great!  I was hoping to use these links to send to some team members off our IT system, but they are internal links only (being objective links). Are these documents meant to be available on non Defence devices?  Regards,
