Mental Resilience Training

'Mental Resilience Training' (MRT) is a psychological resilience program developed and implemented by the British Army’s School of Infantry. It came to the Cove by way of the 5 RAR Resilience Program - the battalion has been using it for the last year.

The program topics are Goal setting, Dealing with negative thoughts, Positive thinking skills, Emotion regulation, Anxiety regulation, Pain tolerance, Positive imagery and Mental rehearsal.

It has a similar focus to the approach taken by FORCOMD, and adheres to evidence based resilience training principles. The program integrates theory lessons on the elements of psychological resilience into the overall training program. It makes use of both the unit psychologist and master trainers to deliver lessons which delivers a stronger statement than just the ‘psych’ talking about ‘psych stuff’. Instructor led delivery is combined with a handbook, and links to external websites are provided for further information on each topic. Instructors provide examples from their own experience in implementing the various skills and techniques taught during the resilience training. Trainees are able to select the tools that are most useful to them and test them under training conditions.

The idea is, that in the same way physical training and tactics can be taught and practiced, so can the skills for dealing with negative thoughts, pain, anxiety and emotion. The message is 'train your brain as you would the body'.
