Deputy Chief of Army RMC-D Graduation Address
20/08/2024
If the entire Army were infantry, we would loose any conflict quickly, which is why we have different Corps, because we need them. And we need access to space and cyber more than ever, and without them the Infantry can't communicate or maintain situational awareness.
The nostalgia for simpler times does not help manage the current complexity. Our need for junior officers to be invested and capable in hardening and securing of our systems has never been higher. Nor has the risk of us loosing those capabilities whilst an adversary maintains them.
Actions in the space and cyber domains are, for the most part, passive and indirect. Things like subterfuge and espionage. They're not decisive in war.
Or the STUXNET virus which did physical damage to a weapons program?
I get the idea of emphasising the war fighter, but that is simply not how the 21st century fight is playing out. Its a weird combo of WWI artillery and advanced space and cyber linked UAV and guided weapons (Note: most guided weapons are highly dependent on space systems).
