The 2024 National Defence Strategy made it clear that Australia faces its most challenging strategic environment since the Second World War. The Australian Army is transforming in response, becoming a force ‘optimised for littoral manoeuvre with a long-range land and maritime strike capability’. The vision for this transformation is captured in the Army’s new capstone publication, The Australian Army Contribution to the National Defence Strategy 2024.
In this short CoveTalk, Colonel Tom McDermott, Director of the Chief of Army’s Initiatives Group (CIG) will explain this new capstone document. He will describe where it came from, and how it was developed. He will then delve into the vision it describes: from the three dimensions of the Army as a national institution, a profession and a fighting force, through the Army’s new roles in the strategy of denial, and to the Army conclusions on the changing character of conflict and what this means for war in the Indo-Pacific.
There is no soldier, team or system in the Army that will be untouched by our littoral adaptation, so if you want to understand why and how we are transforming, then this CoveTalk is for you.
