Niue is a self-governing island state in free association with New Zealand. It is located in the South Pacific, approximately 605km north-east of Tonga. Known as the "Rock of Polynesia," Niue is one of the world’s largest raised coral atolls with a land area of 261 km². Niue’s population is approximately 1,820 (2024). The small village of Alofi is the capital and is where the government and main facilities are located.

Niue operates as a parliamentary democracy with a blend of traditional and modern governance systems. The head of government is the Premier, elected by the Niue Assembly.  The Assembly consists of 20 members who serve three-year terms. With a GDP of $31 million, Niue is the smallest economy in the Pacific. The economy relies on subsistence agriculture, fishing, small scale trade, foreign aid, and remittances from diaspora living abroad.  

Under the Free Association agreement, New Zealand is responsible for Niue’s defence. While Niue does not have a standing military, participation in regional forums provides the local government with a voice to address regional security issues.
