The First World War Battle of Pozieres has long been regarded as a costly battle that produced little meaningful gain. It was the most intense artillery bombardment the Australians had experienced with the 1st Anzac Corps advancing only two miles and suffering 23,000 casualties. However, the first phase of this battle was a success in securing the ruins of Pozieres and the German second line. Follow up operations failed to capitalise on this success and made little headway.
