Edwin Betar is an active reservist with over 10 years in the RAAFAR with 1st Division HQ as part of the Air Liaison Organisation. In civilian life they work as a Senior Systems Engineer on multiple space programs including development work on Lunar projects as part of the NASA’s Artemis program.
The authors of this articles composed the content during their time at the Australian Defence Force Academy under the guidance and ingenuity of their Officer Commanding, Major Newham. The authors are all history students across the Army, Navy, and Airforce and have since graduated the Academy in 2022.
Colin Leggett joined the Army in 1995 and is currently posted to the School of Military Engineering as the Wing Sergeant Major, Construction Wing. Colin Corps enlisted into the RAE as an electrician and has served as a tradesman, Construction Foreman, Works Supervisor and Works Manager on exercises and operations, both domestically and internationally.

Scott Winter AM is currently the Commander of the 3rd Brigade. His most recent appointment was as the CJ-5 Chief Future Operations at NATO HQ Resolute Support Mission, Afghanistan, where he was responsible for developing and advising Afghan operational planning. Immediately prior to this deployment he served as the Director Soldier Career Management – Army, where he was privileged to lead a great team focused on developing the soldiers and building the teams to win the next fight.
Liam is an Advisor in the National Security Division of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. He has previously worked in Defence in the Strategic Policy and Industry Group and the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group. He is an editor of In from the Cold: Reflections on Australia’s Korean War with Professor John Blaxland and Michael Kelly, published in 2020.
