This unit will provide you with a brief, yet detailed and insightful account of the most important terrorism and counterterrorism-related aspects in a post-9/11 era. Over five topics, this unit will cover the conceptual complexity surrounding the definition of terrorism and the understanding of counterterrorism policy and practice; explores why terrorism is so hard to define, what counterterrorism entails, and how effective counterterrorism policy and practice is deployed. The case studies in this unit include a close examination of Australia's counterterrorism policy, as well as a look at the role of the ADF in counterterrorism practice, since the 9/11 attacks.  Finally, the unit will look at some of the most recent counterterrorism developments in South East Asia, including how the Islamic terrorism threat has grown in the region over the last two decades.

This unit aims to develop a critical understanding of the nature of political and security challenges confronting the South Asian region and how these challenges impact upon global security; the relationship between politics, security, and terrorism in South Asia; the appropriate counter-terrorism measures that have been taken by affected states; and the out-of-the-box solutions to security problems confronting South Asia. While a regional perspective will be adopted, the unit will place particular emphasis on the Maldives, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Afghanistan. This unit is for students seeking to extend their study into the political and security challenges confronting the South Asian region.
