The Defence Library Service (DLS) supports Defence decision-making, capability, professional military education (PME) and policy development through the provision of high quality, professional information services and resources. If you need credible information from a reliable source for your unit, project, or general Defence duties, we can assist you.

We offer all Defence personnel a range of information resources online 24/7, and a national physical collection with libraries located on six bases around Australia. DLS staff are dedicated research and information service professionals who can provide specialist research assistance, source hard-to-find items and publications, collaborate on unit-specific PME reading guides, and conduct online and face-to-face training sessions on critical information analysis in addition to sharing tips and tricks to help you make the best use of all library products.

On the DPN or DREAMS you can access all our products and services from the library’s DPN site: DLS Home. For external access from your own device, the authentication service OpenAthens allows for a single login to seamlessly access the Library’s online resources from anywhere you might be posted, and is the only method of access to Janes Online and the SAI Global i2i platform for Australian Standards. Click here to register: Defence OpenAthens registration form.

Hardcopy items may be borrowed from any of the Defence libraries throughout Australia. Once registered you can place a hold from the library catalogue on the DPN and items will be posted to your nominated address. Returning with Defence Mail is made easy with re-usable envelopes and enclosed return address labels.

If you prefer reading on your mobile device, we also subscribe to several platforms that include eBooks, audiobooks, and eMagazines on behalf of Defence, including Libby by OverDrive, ProQuest Ebook Central, and Flipster. Through Libby we are able to create unit specific reading lists and have them accessible to all members from the Libby platform.

Links to the Australian Financial Review, Sydney Morning Herald, and The Age newspapers can be found under the ‘Newspaper’ link on our site, as well as ProQuest Global Newsstream which provides text versions of articles and other news media from regional, national, and international sources. Titles include The Times (UK), New York Times, and The Australian as well as smaller publications The Advertiser (SA), Sunday Territorian (NT), The Border Mail (NSW), Launceston Times (TAS), The Cairns Post (QLD), The Esperance Express (WA), and many, many more.

To stay up to date with the latest news on a number of Defence related topics we provide a number of alerting services, and our staff can also assist you to create your own alerts based on your specific keywords, subject terms, and requirements.

If you have any questions or need any information assistance, please do not hesitate to email the Defence Library’s national inbox askalibrarian@defence.gov.au.
