The Concept of Operations (CONOPS) Brief is defined as 'a verbal statement on how a Commander intends to conduct a task accorded by their higher Headquarters¹.' Delivery of a CONOPS may be accompanied by products such as a Decision Support Overlay or Decision Support Matrix.
As a Staff it is important to understand the detail your Commander will need to provide as part of his CONOPS brief as some of this will be the information provided by the Battle Operating System experts within his Staff.
Watch this demonstration of a CONOPS brief as well as reading Combat Brigade SOP 3.3 Operational Correspondence, Orders, Back Briefs, Rehearsals and After Action Reviews (only available on the DPN) in order to develop a deeper understanding of the CONOPs Brief.

This is my CONOPS brief for the 5 RAR defence within Engagement Area Drum.
First of all my assumptions during planning:
- 19BDE UK will provide fire support coord measures to the 1BDE counter pen and main defence tasks as well as liaison into our battle group.
- tank sqn from 1 Armoured Regiment will have organic recovery assets within their A1.
- FAS can be delivered into the Undullah corridor.
- Boundary extension requested to the North of our current boundary IVO grid square 9620 9720 is approved.

SITUATION
ENEMY
MLCOA
I've assessed the enemy MLCOA to be a rapid break out from restricted terrain of the Undullah corridor and immediate attack off the march from reinforce adv guard BTN to seize the BDE immediate objective which will be the high ground on which we will be situated. The enemy will achieve this by establishing 2 SBF lines previously indicated during the ground brief where he will establish fire and observation onto his breeching assets as they reduce the Logan River. His assault breaching will conduct the reduction with the supporting effort in the north in numerous crossing points and his main effort further to the south side of engagement range for them to be able to exploit through as the main effort the Jimboomba area IVO here and then continue on to the div objective being his link-up point IVO Bing Lee.
6:02
MDCOA
I've assessed the enemy MDCOA to the rapid development of the BDE MDP to the south in the gap between our position 3 BDE who are further to the south. Simultaneously there will be a vertical envelopement to the North by the aviation BTN assets to secure Jimboomba to our rear. This will present multiple dilemmas for the battle group and BDE commanders as the divisional and BDE reserves will most likely be pulled in both locations to be able to stop both fronts. At the same time, he will conduct a fixing position from the NW as well as an SBF from the previously indicated positions while his main effort will conduct a rapid breech of the Logan River and continue the exploitation as previously briefed to Jimboomba while the divisional objective being Bing Lee.
I've assessed the enemy COG to be his ability to generate momentum once he is clear of the Undullah corridor. Given the restrictive terrain that he has been forced into and his need to conduct the crossing across the major obstacle that is the Logan River, I've detailed his HVTs that we will be able to target as follows:
- reconnaissance assets that will provide situational awareness and information on our main defence position and likely crossing points.
- mobility assets, specifically his T80 and BTR80s that will provide him with firepower and mobility during the breach
- breaching assets that will breach the obstacle in the positions as indicated.
- offensive support assets that will provide him suppression and obscuration onto our defensive position during his reduction.

MISSION
5 RAR battle group is to block 2 Mech Div penetration within engagement area drum on order, in order to shape him into the div JART EA
08:08
EXECUTION
Commanders intent
Purpose:
The purpose of our operation is to deny the enemy the ability to breach the Logan River within engagement area Drum, shaping him South into the div JART EA, EA rolling stone where his first echelon brigade will be defeated.
Method:
I've assessed the enemy's centre of gravity to be his ability to generate momentum once clear of the Undullah corridor. I'll defeat the enemy through the following decisive events.
DE 1. Disrupt enemy situational awareness through the identification and neutralisation of ISR and C2 nodes.
DE 2. Disrupt enemy breaching operations through neutralisation of breaching assets and breaching sites.
DE 3. Disrupt enemy offensive support assets through neutralisation of the observation posts and disruption of ARA.
DE 4. Block enemy penetration within Engagement Area Drum through a combination of obstacles and direct fire overmatch.
Endstate:
Penetration of 2 Mech developments blocked and the enemy shaped into the div JART EA, EA rolling stone. 5 RAR is postured to continue defensive or to re-commence offensive operations.

Concept of Ops
Scheme of manoeuvre
The scheme of manoeuvre for this operation will be 2 phases with a prelim phase.
The prelim will be from now to 09 20:00 K May and will be occupation and establishment of our main defensive position.
Phase 1 will be from 09 20:00 K May until on order however not before 10 06:00 K May. This will be the initial shaping of the enemy by the forward security element and its subsequent withdrawal back to the main defensive position.
Phase 2 will be on order but not before 10 06:00 K May and will be the main defensive battle within Engagement Area Drum.
In the prelim phase, the battlegroup will move from its current assembly area in vicinity of Mundoolan Bowl off the map in this location and as first in the order of march, the brigade will occupy our main defensive position being the right forward position within the brigade covering EA dire straights but specifically for our battle group our own engagement area, Engagement Area Drum. All elements will be firm in the MDP NLT 06 200 K and will commence preparation of the position and establishment of the forward security position as shown on the 925 easting. The MDP is to be set NLT 09 2000 K.
In phase 1 the forward security elements based on support company, reinforced by a troop of tanks will neutralise enemy reconnaissance and commence disruption of the enemy advance within TIAI 1A which is further to the West and TIAI 1B shown here. Upon identification of the advance guard formation forming up to commence a quick attack, they will withdraw through the reserve demolitions shown by the co-ord point here on report line axe back to the main defensive position where they will move into a screening location further to the northeast to gain observation in accordance with the most dangerous in the vicinity of Jimboomba. Phase 1 will end with the MDP defended into engagement area Drum and the security elements withdrawn to the MDP and subsequent tasking. Corkens bridge, the reserve demolition held by 7RAR has been completed and assistance in the clean break of the forward security element if required has been provided by the reserve counter pen position whisky.
In phase 2 the battle group will conduct the main defensive battle. Phase 2 will commence once the security elements have passed through the main defensive position being report line Hammer to the subsequent tasks and the brigade FiBA (fire support base area) has now been re-established on phase line purple which will enact the fire support coordination line. The battlegroup main defensive position will be formed on 2 combat teams up, combat team alpha and combat team bravo and a combat team, CT charlie in depth. The forward combat teams will cover EA Drum while CT Charlie will cover to the north in accordance with the boundary extension detailed during assumptions. Phase 2 will see the disruption of the enemy SBF positions and breaching elements within COIs 2 and 3 as well as in engagement area drum as they penetrate across the river. Offensive support will conduct deep targeting of enemy ARAs in order to neutralise the enemy offensive support assets further to the west. Counter penetration and counterattack by fire within the MDP will be provided throughout by the reserve and counter pen positions Xray Yankee and Zulu. Phase 2 will end with enemy penetration within Engagement Area Drum denied and the MDP intact.
13:30
The main effort by phase:
In the prelim phase main effort is the construction of the obstacle belt as indicated.
The main effort in phase 1 is the forward security position.
Phase 2 main effort is combat team A which is the anchor for the main defensive position.
Upon the enaction of the reserve into the counter-pen position Zulu, the main effort will shift to the battle group reserve.

Supporting concepts by BOS
C3
C3 for the battlegroup will be provided by the battlegroup headquarters and will include GBCB2 COP. Retrans element within the forward security position will provide C3 linkage back to the main defensive position.
ISR
The forward security element will be established during the prelim phase as indicated on the 925 easting. They are to provide indicators and warnings of the enemy's break out from the Undullah corridor and neutralise enemy recon elements within zone. They will do this by covering NAIs 1 and 2. They will queue offensive support assets into 1A further to the west and 1B prior to their withdrawal through the reserve demolition and demolition guard on Report Line Axe.
The concept of ISR in phase 2 is to occupy a screen to the northeast of the MDP in order to gain coverage into NAI 4 and 5 in accordance with the most dangerous course of action of a vertical envelopment in the vicinity of the Jimboomba.
Offensive support
The prelim phase will see the establishment of an OP line along Phase Line Purple within the forward security element. The priority of effort is to record targets in TAI 1A 1B and within Engagement Area Drum.
Phase 1 essential fire support task 1 is to disrupt the enemy advance guard breakout and assault and facilitate the clean break of the forward security element. CAS will focus on TAI 1A and DS will be recorded within TAI 1B.
Phase 2 essential fire support task 2 is to disrupt the enemy's ability to establish SBFs in TAIs 2 and 3.
Essential fire support task 3 is the disruption of enemy breaching sites and equipment on Report Line Axe along the Logan River.
Essential fire support task 4 is to neutralise enemy ARAs west of Report Line Sickle.
Guns will occupy ARA 1 throughout with alternate ARA 2 further to the east. CAS will be provided by 2 by FA-18 sorties in phase 1 and 2 by FA-18 sorties in phase 2. A standard bomb load for both phases.
The fire support coordination line on Phase Line Purple will be active once the forward security element has passed through Phase Line Axe being the reserve demolition.
Air defence
All organic GBAD elements within the brigade have been retained by the brigade headquarters and will provide point defence to brigade C3 assets throughout all phases as well as the reserve demolition guard on reportline axe. Battlegroup air defence will be organic weapon systems within the combat teams with the priority of protection to C3 nodes and the reserve. All platforms for air defence are weapons-tight in phase 1 and weapons-free on order in phase 2.
Mobility and survivability
1 CER complete in the prelim phase will establish the obstacle in accordance with Engagement Area Drum. The concept of MS in phase 1 is to provide mobility support to the forward security element for their withdrawal back through the reserve demolition. The concept of MS in phase 2 is to maintain mobility to the reserve in their counter-penetration positions. The priority of support phase 1 is the forward security element, phase 2 is the reserve. The priority of effort for phase 1 is mobility as too for phase 2.
Combat service support
CSS will be provided by a combination of first and second line CSS assets and a formation led dumping of defensive stores being class 4 onto the main defensive position. Sub unit A1 echelons are to located at the MDP while A2 elements less those colocated with the CSST are to be located in the BSG. A CSST from 1 CSSB will be establish a CCP, ECP and TCP at GR 980182. The CSST will deploy with 3 DOS (days of supply) less class 5 where 2 first lines will be retained as a reserve. All stocks within the CSST will be on wheels. The CSST will provide a distrobution point for the foreward security element for its resupply post phase 1 as it moves back into its secondary tasking.
Medical
Priority 1 casualties will be AME coordinated via the CSST. Priorities 2 and 3 are to be via road to the CCP and from there either road or air to the BSG.
RASF
Combat Team Charlie is to be prepared to provide a platoon-sized security element for A2 elements tranisiting should the defensive battle go for more than 48 hours.
19:10
Key timings
The time now 06 1500 K May.
You are to depart the assembly area no later than 06 1700 K.
Occupy the MDP not later than 06 2000 K.
The screen is to be out no later than 07 2330 K.
The MDP is to be set no later than 19 2000 K.
The enemy advance guard battalion is expected to break out not before 10 0600 K.
The screen is to withdraw on order from that time.
The main defensive battle is to comment on order however not before the conditions have been set by withdrawal and before 10 0600 K.
Risks to the plan
I have 1 major risk which is the inability of the screen to break clean. I will mitigate this by having a rehearsed battlegroup reserve position in counter pen postion whisky that can be occupied to help achieve a clean break. I'll also request an on call mousetrap through 3 UK brigade to allow a withdrawl through the north should they receive pressure from the west or south west.
That ends my concept of operations brief, are there any questions?
