As senior non-commissioned officers and officers, it is inevitable that we will find ourselves posted out of command appointments and in to staff positions at some point in our careers. It can be all too easy to see this as a negative posting: less time spent training, focusing on people and equipment, and more time spent 'driving a desk' under a mountain of spreadsheets and power-point presentations.

At these times in our careers it can be easy to forget we are still performing leadership functions. Yet while opportunities to actively display traditionally held views of military leadership may not be as obvious as they are would be in a direct command position,  there are other ways to demonstrate leadership while in staff roles.
