Wargaming Theme Wrap-up

In 2023, The Cove published content relating to four themes. Collected here you can find the content – both Cove-created and contributed – published as part of our wargaming theme. Interested in exploring wargaming as an enjoyable yet useful way of conducting PME? Start here!

Cove Wargaming Toolbox

We kicked off this theme by collating all of our Wargaming resources that we have published over the years into one handy feature. From video demonstrations, articles discussing the theory of wargaming, to resources to help you set up and run wargames for PME, you can find it all here: Cove Feature: Wargaming.

Army Wargaming Conference 2023

The Australian Defence College (ADC) held the 2023 ADF Wargaming Conference over 11-12 April this year. The Cove Team attended in order to further our knowledge of wargaming in the ADF and expand The Cove's reach amongst the wargaming community.

A summary of what we learned at the Wargaming Conference, including links to great ADELE resources such as the ADF Wargaming Community of Practice page, can be found here: Wargaming Conference 2023

Cove Giveaway – Take That Hill!

Our favourite part of the wargaming theme was undoubtedly our giveaway of 'Take That Hill!'. Take That Hill! (TTH) is a is a simple, entry-level table top wargame in which players take command of a rifle platoon facing an entrenched enemy section occupying key terrain, developed and licensed by Fight Club International.

To support Army members seeking to commence wargaming and 'Fight Clubs' in their units, The Cove procured physical copies of TTH and give them away – at no cost – to any Army members, units, or clubs who wanted one! Our TTH giveaway launch included and introduction of the game itself, including video demonstrations of the wargame, can found here: Take That Hill! An Entry-Level Wargame.

Before long, members who had received copies of TTH provided great feedback on it's value to PME – you can find reviews and insight into playing TTH here: Take That Hill! Reviews.

Wargaming Networks in the ADF

We expanded our networks of wargamers in the ADF, and found some great SME partners on the wargaming, such as the Land Simulation Army Wargaming page (DPN link only), and the Australian Defence College's Wargaming Community of Practice page. These networks are great to keep up with events and connect with others making use of wargaming for Joint PME. As introduced above, The Cove also commends Fight Club International to expand you network of wargame enthusiasts.

Article by LTCOL Dave Hill

Finally, the Chairman of the ADF Wargaming Association and former SO1 Land Simulation and Wargaming, Army Knowledge Centre, contributed his thoughts on the use of simulation and technology wargaming, and discussed the 2023 Brigade Tactics Competition – read about it here: Simulating War.

Wargaming continues to enjoy a resurgence amongst Army and the ADF, and is a perfect activity for PME and enhancing your Intellectual Edge. We hope the Wargaming Theme of 2023 has helped to further the uptake of wargaming across Army.
