ECN 226 Recovery Technician

Identified as a critical trade, ECN 226 is an important role that allows Army’s vehicles and equipment to stay in the fight, support combat efforts, and achieve their objective. If you enjoy big machinery, four wheel driving, and getting your hands dirty – this could be a career option for you.

Recovery Technicians are part of the Corps of Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and are employed in units across Australia. They are trained to recover all types of Army equipment, utilising state of the art medium and heavy recovery vehicles, as well as specialised tracked and wheeled armoured recovery vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with winches, towing equipment, and cranes.

Recovery Technician key tasks include:

  • Using recovery vehicles and equipment and theory to work out how to retrieve/extricate immobilised manoeuvre assets with the use of winches, cranes and gas cutting equipment.
  • Working independently or as a small team for extensive hours in high tempo conditions in both combat and non-combat operations.
  • Providing assistance when travelling through rough and/or boggy terrain and clearing choke-points in order to keep the fighting force advancing towards the objective.
  • Providing technical maintenance of Army’s lifting, recovery, and tie-down equipment.

Generalist Stream

All Recovery Technicians are trained to operate the Rheinmetall MAN Medium (42M) and Heavy (45M) Recovery Vehicles and associated trailers. As part of this training they attain the following qualifications:

  • High Risk Work Licence – C6 (licence to operate a slewing mobile crane up to 60 tonnes)
  • High Risk Work Licence – Dogman
  • TLI40122 Certificate IV in Specialist Driving Operations – Heavy Recovery.

Recovery Technicians have the opportunity to become a specialist within an armoured stream. This requires them to become qualified as a driver, recovery operator and crew commander on one of the following platforms:

  • Armoured Recovery Vehicle – Light (M113AS4 ARVL)
  • Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle – Recovery (ASLAV–R or Boxer CRV-R)
  • Armoured Recovery Vehicle – Heavy (M88A2 ARVH).
